Takachiho Gorge
While we could not view the rock, we could go to the nearby meeting point where all the other gods got together and tried to figure out how to lure her out of the rock...
There were other people taking this hike, but it was not overly busy. As well, in general, this part of Japan is not heavily visited by foreigners.

Apparently, all the other gods met in this cave to make their plans.
And they suceeded! The secret to their sucess? Apparently it involved a dancer, and the sun's curiosity got the better of her!
It seems like the correct thing to do here, is to make small rock piles!
On the walk back to the entrance we met this young girl who was happy to practice her school-age English! Her English was better than my Japanese!
We were beginning to realize that while Japan may be famous for cherry blossoms, it was doing pretty good with wisteria too!

This was apparently the entry of a trail that headed towards that secluded rock. It was also beside the parking lot we were using.
There was a variety of these mythical personalities (this is #29 in the series), which were visible at various locations throughout the region.
These trees marked the end of the trail, but the mysterious rock was simply not in sight.
