Kyoto
Tomoko joined us this day, as Tour Guide, and her first recommendation was
Sanjusangen-do, a large indoor
collection of 1000 life-size statues of the goddess of mercy, on either side of a
much larger statue. There many large carved statues of other gods.
Unfortunately: no cameras inside... But the grounds were beautiful too!
The building housing statues was very long, and worshippers were everywhere inside,
as was a monk doing his prayers.
Then off to tour a market. I have no idea of what any of these food items are...
We travelled down a narrow lane, and found a popular shrine attached
to a small shopping area. Apparently touching this statue is good, and it took me many tries to get this
picture as passers-by would quickly put out their hands, and get in the picture. It's evening, the light's dim,
and the exposure is about 1/2 second (no flash, it's easier that way), so the hands would just be a blur in the picture...
