Vatnajokull
Remember that simple bridge construction? Well, here's why: the river flood plain decided to take an extra bite out of the south river bank!
And now we get close to the ocean again, and this time there is no offshore sand bar, so we get real waves! This must be the "black sand beach".
And that means we are at the bridge over the glacier outflow lagoon!
Now this is the most practical advice I'd seen yet!
The Breidamerkur glacier in the distance is melting into this lagoon, which opens to the ocean. The icebergs have run aground!
The water was flowing to the left, and the big chunks would move from time to time...
The lagoon is not very deep, so the bigger chunks of ice were trapped for a while.
Artisitic impression does count for something, and this berg seems to have it!
John has the right idea: take a picture of a chunk of the old glacier!
...Good idea, so I did too!
Some of the tourists went out on these funny boats. Not shown is the large parking lot with many tour businesses and busses from Reykjavik.
Ugly little amphibious machines! There appeared to be four of them, going in rotation.
