The Golden Circle: Gullfoss and Geysir
One of the feature destinations in Iceland, Gullfoss (Gold falls), is very much worth the trip, and very popular as a bus day-trip from Reykjavic.
As an aside, this is why we rented the car. While everything is available via tour bus, that is a rather expensive option.
For example, the taxi between Blue Lagoon and Reykjavik (40 min drive) was ~$400 one-way. The bus from the airport to Reykjavic was abt $100 each.
Unlike Skogafoss, which you approach from below, Gullfoss is approached from above.
Crampons are provided in winter, just don't wear them in the restaurant! Also note the warnings ((lower right), particulary between the no smoking and no camping.
It's a short walk to get to the falls, but the approach is impressive!
Like most of the natural attractions in Icland, you can get dangerously close to them!
Selfies are required!
The river trips over two successive diagonal cracks in the ground, doing its best to enlarge the canyon.
Lots of frost and ice still. Typical daytime temperatures during our stay were between 1 and 5 celcius, with a nasty windchill.
We made it up to the rock view-point close to the first rapids.
...you had to be there...
I mean seriously, you had to be there!
After hiking back out of the canyon, it was time to check out the very touristy souvenir shop!
Required transport for going off the normal roads. The maps have marked 4x4 roads, which require a vehicle that could cross creeks up to 1 meter deep.
