The Golden Circle: Gullfoss and Geysir
Not far from Gullfoss is Geysir. The original geysir that gave its name to all others. It is no longer active, but is still there.
The current major performer is Strokkur.
And it looks like this ! It erupted about every 5 minutes, with varying degrees of spectacularity (is that even a word?).
Getting closer... It always starts with the blue bubble.
and a rapidly growing pile of hot water!
Which explodes.
And keeps exploding.
Until it gives up trying to get you soaked!
That is Geysir, and currently off limits due to the pathways being rebuilt.
Geysirs are hot springs with a kink in their steam supply plumbing. This causes pressure to build until it can clear the water out of the pipe. Then the cycle begins once more.
Without that supply kink, they just bubble along happily all day! ...and night...
There were steam vents everywhere, and water everywhere, so the new walkways were a good way to keep shoes clean and dry!
